Ramadan Start Dates 2013

Each year, there are sometimes confusions as to when to begin Ramadan. As a general rule of thumb, it is advisable for Muslims to follow their local mosques (masjids) (i.e., the mosque that they typically associate with and pray in).

Sheikh Yasir Qadhi advised this on his Facebook page recently: "Do not make the beginning and ending of the month an issue of ikhtilaf al-quloob (the differing of hearts), and leave it an issue of ikhtilaf al-furoo (trivial differences). In case you don't associate with a particular masjid, go with the majority of Muslims in your community".

That said, here are the start dates of Ramadan 2013 based on geographical regions.

Saudi-Arabia has announced that Shaaban of the Hijri year 1434 will be of 30 days because no moon was sighted for Ramadan on the evening of July 8th, 2013. Therefore, the first day of Ramadan in Saudi-Arabia and a majority of the gulf countries will be on July 10th, 2013.

North American Muslim organizations have announced that the first day of Ramadan will be on July 9th, 2013 in North America
